Winter Storm Preparation

Winter storms can disrupt our lives and create hazardous conditions. To ensure our safety and well-being, it’s crucial to take the necessary steps, so you can be prepared for these storms.

Winterize Your Home

• Check and clean gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams.
• Insulate pipes and weatherstrip doors and windows to prevent heat loss.
• Stock up on heating fuel and have a backup plan in case of power outages.
• Consider purchasing a generator for emergency power.

Build an Emergency Kit

• Include essentials like non-perishable food, water (one gallon per person per day), first-aid kit, flashlights,batteries, blankets, warm clothes, and a battery-powered radio.
• Don’t forget pet supplies or necessary medications for everyone in the household.
• Winterize your kit by adding a blanket, warm socks and hats, and gloves.
• Have a plan ready in the case of evacuation, and ensure all members of your household are familiar with how to contact one another in an emergency. 

Prepare Your Vehicle

• Check tire pressure and tread depth. Consider winter tires for improved traction.
• Keep your windshield washer fluid topped off and have an ice scraper and snow brush readily available.
• Pack an emergency kit for your car, including jumper cables, flares, a shovel, cat litter or sand for traction, a blanket, and snacks.

Stay Informed

• Monitor weather forecasts and advisories from reliable sources.
• Discuss potential impacts and preparedness plans with your colleagues, friends, and family.
• Have a clear understanding of your workplace’s emergency plan and communication protocols.

If You Must Go Outside

• Dress in layers of warm and waterproof clothing. Wear insulated boots with good traction.
• Pack extra warm clothes, gloves, and a hat in case of extended exposure to cold weather.
• Be aware of the signs and symptoms of cold stress and hypothermia.
