Types of Identity Theft

1. Social Engineering Attacks. This involves manipulating individuals into revealing sensitive information. To do this, hackers may impersonate trustworthy sources, such as union representatives or financial institutions, to trick members into disclosing personal data. 

To guard against social engineering attacks:

• Try to avoid sharing personal information over the phone or online.
• Verify the legitimacy of requests.
• Use secure communication channels.

2. Phishing and Email Scams. These are deceptive attempts to acquire personal information by posing as reputable entities through email, text messages, or websites. Be wary of suspicious emails asking for confidential details or directing them to click on suspicious links.

To protect against phishing: 

• Check to see if there’s anything strange about the sender’s email address (unusual domain names, mispelled or altered names, or emails with a random string of numbers and letters).
• Do not click on suspicious links.
• Do not provide personal information unless the link is from a trusted and secure website.

3. Data Breach. These occur when unauthorized individuals gain access to sensitive data stored by organizations. Members should be vigilant about organizations they share personal information with, ensuring they have robust data security measures in place. 

To protect against a data breach:

• Regularly monitor financial and personal accounts for any unusual activity.
• Setting up alerts for transaction types or dollar amounts.
• Promptly report any suspected breaches to relevant authorities. 
• Consider using strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication where available.

4. ATM Skimming and Card Fraud. Identity theft through ATM skimming involves criminals placing devices on ATMs to steal card information. 

To protect against phishing: 

• Inspect ATMs for any suspicious attachments or loose components before use.
• Cover the keypad while entering your PIN, as hidden cameras may record it.
• Regularly monitor bank statements and report any unauthorized transactions promptly.
• Consider using contactless payment methods or mobile wallets, as they offer enhanced security features.
